In the hour of the wolf
when longed for sleep eludes
wind-blown rain knocking on the panes
meeting with despondent moods

reading mail from overseas
or friends who also roam early hours
smoke a cigarette, have a cup of tea
feel like crying to the heavenly powers

sadness seeps surreptitiously
luring, like an old friend
summoning recall, recognition
a depth of sorrow with no end

as daily confrontations thwarted
the nightly struggles get worse
hurdling along the mind's circuit
a minefield to traverse

reaching to retrieve the power
to suspend a spiralling fall
exhaustion declares the battle a draw
fatigued into bed I crawl

  De drie laatste strofes vind ik keigoed wat klank en inhoud betreffen.
  
  In de eerste strofe heb ik probleem met 'longed'. Ik zou 'longing' willen lezen. Misschien is mijn Engelse kennis ontoereikend en kan 'longed' wel.
  
  In de tweede strofe : de overgang grammaticaal tussen 'reading mail' en 'or friends who....' zie ik niet zitten.
  
  Ik ben amateur qua dichten dus til hier niet te zwaar aan.
  killea: Thank you Christine. In the second verse it reads: reading mail FROM overseas or (FROM) friends....... as for longing and longed - I longed for.......sleep thus, the longed for sleep.
