A Memory

The early morning sun
seeped through the curtain
invading an unfinished dream,
aroma of her coffee wafted
a welcome greeting,
on the porch of the cabin
we sat chatting or silent
watching frenzied squirrels
listening to rustle of trees,
rippling sounds of the river
over rocks and pebbles,
delighting in hummingbirds
flocking to the feeder,
here in this haven
atop a mountain high.

We travelled along the highway
flanked by forests for miles,
down the last incline
a vast vista of the valley
exploded into sight,
an unforgettable expanse,
a panorama of meadows, farms,
an endless horizon,
proof we had come down
from the top of a mountain.
