Memories of Africa

door killea

An old emaciated woman
a hut bare but for a rack, a bed
a cooking pot on the fire
share my meagre food, she said

ancestors waited fearful, chained
sense of horror, cavernous, dark
a life of slavery if they survived
horrendous journey to embark

hospitality of the poor
honour bestowed from the coop
served with eloquence and grace
a chicken head in my soup

cruel and beautiful, nights so dark
sitting in the compound everyone
in the distance could be heard
the plaintive beating of the African drum

killea: Miepe, I would love to do that, but just so you do not misunderstand my poem, these are my imprinted memories of Ghana when I visited a long time ago. Memories I hold very dear, and with the utmost respect for the people. There was another side to Ghana even then, but the simple moments of incredible generosity of those that had nothing in comparison to myself, are the moments I cherish............... Thanks for FB

It's a shame that Africa is so screwed up. They have many natural resources, more than enough to get by if the West wouldn't have exploited them throughout the years. Sierra Leone alone could have made billions from all the diamonds they found there if the RUF wouldn't have screwed things up.
Never been to Africa, but I'm going there one day...
